I think I would rather live on the verge of falling and let my security be in the all-sufficiency of the grace of God than to live in some kind of pietistic illusion of moral excellence.

I heartily agree with this one.
Of course, I don't believe that obeying God's commandments is some kind of pietistic illusion or moral excellence.
I don't know if that's what the author was implying, but once again, that appears to be the implication.
