Humility

A man can counterfeit love, he can counterfeit faith, he can counterfeit hope and all the other graces, but it is very difficult to counterfeit humility. D. L. Moody

The only humility that is really ours is not that which we try to show before God in prayer, but that which we carry with us in our daily conduct. Andrew Murray

The meek man will attain a place of soul rest. As he walks on in meekness he will be happy to let God defend him. The old struggle to defend himself is over. He has found the peace which meekness brings. A.W. Tozer

Whatever makes us feel superior to other people, whatever tempts us to convey a sense of superiority, that is the gravity of our sinful nature, not grace. Phillip Yancey

Humility and love are precisely the graces which the men of the world can understand, if they do not comprehend doctrines. They are the graces about which there is no mystery, and they are within reach of all classes... The poorest Christian can every day find occasion for practicing love and humility. J. C. Ryle

Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. Unknown

The man, full of himself, can never proclaim the Christ who emptied Himself. Jacquelyn K. Heasley

A heart that understands what is implicit in God's tenderness is humbled beyond any hope of goodness or worth in itself. Marian Scheele

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5

There's a lot of wisdom in this post but this one really stood out to me.

Thanks Bino!

Aida, I have always liked that quote as well. Andrew Murray has a great little book called, what else, "Humility." If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.

One of the things I think about when it comes to humility is that, for a Christian, self deprecation isn't humility, its false humility. You often hear Christians refer to themselves as slimy worms or "sinners saved by grace." No, we WERE sinners who were saved by grace. Martyn Lloyd-Jones had a great quote that humility/meekness is “Right thinking” about yourself.

“Meekness is essentially a true view of oneself, expressing itself in attitude and conduct with respect to others. It is therefore two things. It is my attitude towards myself; and it is an expression of that in my relationship to others”

It would seem that if I consider myself to be a slimy worm before God, then that would be reflected in how I see and treat others. If however, I see myself as righteous, accepted and holy, and it's all of Him and none of me, then that will be reflected in a life that seeks the best for others...I would want them to receive the same gift God has given me.

In Christ,
Gary

"Right Thinking" is critical.

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he"

I think as we start to see ourselves in the light of the truth of God's word, we will start accepting ourselves, thus overcomes self pity.
